Learning Community Charter School Holding Spring Gala Fundraiser
The Learning Community Charter School (LCCS) pre-K through 8 school will hold its fifth annual Spring Gala fundraiser on Friday.
LCCS, located at 2495 Kennedy Blvd. in the West Side/Lincoln Park neighborhood, relies on parent-volunteer support to raise over $100,000 a year, well over the $60,000 needed to run the school annually. The Spring Gala is one of their main fundraising events (another would be the Jersey City PI-E Day celebration last month) and features local musicians, artists and food.
One of the highlights of the event is its silent art auction with work donated by more than a dozen local artists including Fred “Ree” Vilomar, a street artist who began his career tagging subway cars in New York City in the 1970s and has since earned great acclaim and currently has work displayed at the Brooklyn Museum.
Also participating is Iris Rivo, an LCCS parent and art teacher who has taught in New York City public schools for almost two decades and has a studio in Journal Square. Rivo’s work is inspired by familiar, recognizable cultural icons which she juxtaposes in a grid-like format.
Last but not least, local art icon Uta Brauser–the brains behind the Creative Grove Artist and Designer Market and Fish with Braids Gallery–will also have work up for bidding. Brauser was recently honored as one of 27 Women of Action by the city after being nominated by At-Large Councilwoman Viola Richardson. One of her latest projects is “Got Armor?” a fashion line that mixes art and politics in response to instances of gun violence around the country.
Guests at the gala will be able to view and bid on each of the artists’ works in person. There will also be live jazz music from Language of Music, including Neville L’Green and several professional musicians and instructors; food; and local wine and beer.
There will also be a raffle with prizes like an iPad, Yankees baseball tickets, a Pocanos getaway, and a luxury NYC weekend hotel stay at The Benjamin featuring a $300 food gift certificate that can be used at a variety of top NYC eateries.
The gala will be held Friday, April 19 from 6 pm to 10 pm at the Beacon’s Art Deco Great Room, located at 4 Beacon Way. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased in advance by emailing Brittin Bleakley at brittin-bleakley[at]lccsnj.org or at the door on the night of the event. For more information, visit LCCS’s website.
