Flag Raising Today Marking 65th Israel Independence Day
The Israeli flag will be raised today at City Hall in recognition of the 65th Anniversary of Israel Independence Day.
At 3 pm today, April 17, Mayor Jerramiah Healy, City Council members, the Division of Cultural Affairs, and members of the Israeli-American community will raise the flag.
“The Israeli-American community of Jersey City has led by example not only locally but nationwide,” said Mayor Jerramiah Healy in a statement.“This dedicated community has contributed directly to Jersey City and continues to do so. In raising their flag alongside the American flag we are celebrating not only the triumphs of the Israeli community, but also the incredible impact that they have made on our great city.”
May 14, 1948 marked the rebirth of the establishment of the first Jewish state in 2,000 years, when Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel the day before the British Mandate was due to expire. Twenty-four hours following the declaration, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq armies invaded the newly declared Jewish state, beginning what became known as Israel’s War of Independence. The State of Israel defended the sovereignty it had recently restored and triumphed.
The 65th Anniversary of Israeli Independence not only represents the beginning of a state, but also signifies the birthplace of the Jewish community, culture and religion, that has so long fought for its freedom.
